Mullingar Athletics in form U12 Kestrels traveled to Kilcullen on Saturday for the second leg of the MSL League Cup match, having drawn 0-0 at home in the first round. Kilcullen who play in the Kildare league are highly rated in this league.
Kilcullen struck first with a fine goal from a cross and header leaving goalkeeper Alan Turzak no chance.
The Kestrels however didn’t drop their heads and on a difficult surface had most of the possession. Soon after, Alex Sheerin got behind the Kilcullen defense and was taken down by the keeper resulting in a penalty. Unfortunately Alex’ kick hit the post and was cleared.
In the second half the Kestrels kept up their work rate and eventually won another penalty. This time Alfie Armstrong took the spot kick and buried it in the top corner.
Kilcullen responded and won a penalty with 15 minutes to go. They failed to take advantage however, missing the target.
With the game on a knife edge at 1-1 and with Mullingar having the advantage of an away goal, Mullingar Athletic now only had to see the game out to progress but it was tense.
Fine pressing play from Daire McDonald’s finally paid off when he won a free 20 yards out. Ryan Kelly took it and Alfie flicked it on for Fionn Maguire to pounce on the loose ball in box to half volley home and close out game for Kestrels with 2 minutes left.
A great away win for the Kestrels who now look forward to the next round.
