Under 14 MSL Division West – Mullingar Athletic Cubs 3 Birr Town 1

On a lovely day this was a game the cubs were looking forward to competing against a very good and strong Birr Town team.

Indeed the defence with Sean Carroll in goals and the back four of Daire Keane,  Figo Chent, Adam O’Connor and Jamie Burke were not going to take any chances with keeping it tight and using their midfield and wingers with precise passing, and with a midfield of Ethan Brown, Eihmin Sweeney, Mark O’Gara and Michael Horan working extremely hard for the team, the boys were producing some nice football with Ethan Brown using his speed and skill up the right which Birr just couldn’t cope with and Mark O’Gara showing why he was missed after he received a very bad injury a few weeks ago with his tireless work in the centre and the front two of Killian Brown and Robert Phelan causing problems every time they received the ball, it was constant pressure from the cubs but the Birr goal seemed to be leading a charmed life, then the cubs took a well deserved lead with the midfield chasing down the ball with Eihmin and Mark not giving Birr time on the ball and the ball went through to Killian whose close control took him away from their defence to coolly put the ball past the keeper and into the corner of the net, the boys were producing some nice football indeed  an excellent move which started in the goals from Sean who gave it to Adam then to Daire who slipped it to Mark who then fed Ethan who slipped it to Killian whose close control was giving the Birr defence problems he had a quick look up and seen Ethan making a run and slipped it through for Ethan to have a shot which just slipped past the post it was a fantastic team move.

We all knew Birr would come back into it and they did but with Jamie and Figo cleaning up on the left and Eihmin and Michael working tirelessly  they were restricted to a few efforts which didn’t trouble Sean but Birr weren’t giving up and were getting a few corners and it was a corner that they got there equaliser it came over and hit a few lads and fell perfectly for the Birr attacker to put in the net, nothing the boys could do about it, but credit to the Cubs they kept going forward with Robert and Killian coming close and Mark O’Gara almost putting the lads in front just before the break with a superb shot just before half time.

In the second half we change keeper  with Christopher Lynn coming in and he was put under pressure straight away but he was handling it with ease the cubs had taken there foot of the pedal and were letting Birr back in it a few changes were need to freshen up so on came Cathal Hessian, Jack Dalton and Mark Cairns to freshen up the lads, the cubs were starting to put the pressure with Mark O’Gara putting in a superb performance and Ethan constantly causing problems on their left the cubs were hitting the post and bar and just going past the post and the Birr keeper  having a superb game but Birr were still dangerous on the break but with the defence and Christopher coping well with everything but the lads needed another goal and got it through Killian, but again it was a team goal with Figo giving it to Daire who fed it to Ethan who got down the right wing and crossed it and with Robert and jack putting pressure on the defence the ball slipped through to Killian who slipped it in at the back post a well deserved lead, Birr were now trying very hard for an equaliser but the cubs defence were coping well, on came Jamie again in central midfield and was playing well the cubs needed another to make it safe and it came with a superb free kick from Ethan, it was given on the left corner of their box Ethan looked up and put it perfectly into the top right hand corner a beautiful free kick which even the crowd all applauded the boys deserved this, and could so easily have increased it when Jamie controlled the ball in the midfield and hit a beautiful left footed shot that was heading into the top corner but just swerved a little and hit the bar,  the game finished as it started with the Cubs on top a thoroughly entertaining game which produced an excellent team performance from the Cubs, well done boys they deserved it.
